The most popular time to take CBD (particularly oils) is 30 minutes before bed. This is because a sizeable portion of individuals include it in their nightly routine, however, is night-time the best time of day for your CBD intake? Well that depends on your reason for using the product.
CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is a compound found in the hemp plant that has received a mass amount of attention due to its involvement with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which modulates multiple processes in the body, including pain sensation, mood, sleep and more.
There are multiple methods to administer CBD, each of which can determine the time of day we take CBD.
CBD oils and ingestibles typically take 3-4 weeks for the full effects to take place, whereas CBD topicals and creams, such as our muscle recovery cream & miracle balm, can have instantaneous effects at the site of action.
So, when is the best time?
CBD is typically found in oil form and is therefore fat-soluble (dissolves best in fats). Once swallowed, following your 60 seconds under the tongue, some studies indicate eating foods high in fat further aids absorption into the bloodstream, allowing the CBD distribute around the body. High-fat foods include nuts, avocado, vegetable oils, seeds, cheese, eggs, full-fat yoghurt and fish.
Taking CBD for Recovery
Creams & topicals are the most common method when using CBD products to target a specific area, eg muscle/joints, however the combination of CBD oils and topicals are most effective for arthritis. For recovery after exercise, using the cream post-training could be your best time to administer the product in order to get the full effects of the topical, it can take between 15 – 45 minutes. Application of the cream is recommended 1-4 times per day, enhancing and accelerating your recovery, particularly when training multiple days per week.
Taking CBD for Stress & Anxiety
Optimally, splitting your dose throughout the day allows us reach the full stream of benefits, however for many this can be difficult to remember.
You can try taking half your dose in the morning and half at night, in order to keep stress and anxiety levels at bay throughout the day and night. You can try and leave your CBD bottle beside your toothbrush to remind yourself at these times.
Alternatively, taking your dose in the morning can help set your day up, before/after your morning coffee/tea. By doing this, CBD can interact with the system in the day ahead, allowing the CBD to calm the anxiety and stress throughout the day.
CBD has been known to help with a normal appetite so if maintaining an appetite throughout the day is a difficulty, taking it at night might be of little help so administering the product in the morning could be to your best advantage.
Taking CBD for Sleep
If these issues do not trouble you during the day but your priority is improving sleep, then taking CBD as part of your nightly routine could help relax the body and mind to encourage an uninterrupted sleep. Taking 30 mins before your head hits the pillow is optimal.
Consistency is key when it comes to taking CBD. One to two dosages will most likely not have a massive effect but taking it daily, for a prolonged period will reap the benefits. If you are not seeing the results you hope for, try and increase the dose every couple of days.
